the confederacy except for florida and virginia, it's exactly the same. that coalition retains to this day that's the regional party they're becoming. very interesting piece in the new yorker talking about the potential for texas to become blue in the next few cycles, and if that happens, then the democrats start over 270, i think jonathan can do the math in his head, and forget it. then you're just a minority party we would study in political science classes. >> this afternoon you and i were discussing some things that have been part of this republican campaign and we talked about the jim crow era. >> uh-huh. >> how much of that rhetoric has been as it were reignited this time around. >> it was full of it this time. i think if you look at the bush campaign, the bush years, did he a lot of things badly, but he was embracing of latinos. he wasn't overtly in terms of rhetoric negative toward blacks. i think he took it to a much more subtle level. romney brought it back. he's making birtherism jokes, sending john sununu out in say crazy things, rick santorum saying whatever he said about blah peop

arizona that arizona could gain 20,000 jobs and $1 billion in revenue, states like florida could gain $100 million in revenue because of monies they don't have to put into their own health care system and increased economic activity this would bring to the state, this is absurd and irrational position. there's only one reason republican governors are doing this. it is because they don't want to be primaried. this goes to the central issue for republicans. are they going to tell the crazy in the primary, the extreme right that have created a minority status for this party, that the positions they want the party to hold are ungovernable, they cannot win elections? are they going to stand up to them the way they didn't stand up to rush limbaugh, the way they didn't stand up to donald trump, stay rational positions or let the inmates be in charge of the asylum -- >> hoeld on -- >> hold on -- >> i'll let you respond in a moment. the other point i want to make is also in the days since the election we've been hearing about wanting to be the kindler, gentler republican party and say we care about

mr. hustad in ohio, the governor in florida. all they did was inspire democrats to come out and vote. >> the romney campaign made two mistakes in terms of polling. the one was they had this almost religion thought that the young voters, minority voters would not turn out. one thing we didn't talk about enough during the election is a lot of people really like barack obama, particularly among the youth and minority voters and a lot of white voters as well really like barack obama. so they missed that. they seemed to think voting in '08 was an aberration and a fluke. that was a wrong assumption. the second thing they missed was a lot of polls, even some of the polls nbc did showed republican enthusiasm was a little higher than democratic enthusiasm in some states. the campaign took that to mean the democrats weren't going to turn out. some tea partiers were really excited but a lot of democrats were just as excited. >> right. karen, into today's "new york times" timothy egan writes, if you believe in climate change, finding a path to citizenship for millions of hard working hispanics,
